Mary Heilmann Artist's Talk
Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH  43210

Everyone who’s anyone will want to hear artist Mary Heilmann discuss her work, on view in the exhibition Mary Heilmann: To Be Someone, in this talk that is immediately before the opening celebration for the spring exhibitions. A pioneer in abstract painting, Heilmann creates lush, evocative landscapes and cityscapes where colors buzz with energy. Through years of teaching and a generous spirit, Heilmann has become a mentor and touchstone for several generations of artists, leading her to be described as one of today’s “most important yet least recognized” artists. Come listen as she talks about painting and her career, and then be among the first to see three new exhibitions: the Heilmann show, Jeff Smith: Bone and Beyond, and Jane Hammond: Fallen.

Mary Heilmann: To Be Someone
Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH  43210

Sat, May 10 - Sun, Aug 3, 2008 Wexner Center Galleries This nationally touring show is the first retrospective of work by influential New York-based painter Mary Heilmann. A pioneer of infusing abstract painting with influences from popular culture and craft traditions, Heilmann is one of the most important yet least recognized artists in the United States today. One of the very few female abstract painters of her generation, she has nevertheless maintained a steadfast commitment to producing eccentric, engaging, visceral paintings. Featuring 75 works from the last three decades, the exhibition also explores Heilmann’s interest in ceramics, decorative arts, film, and music. It is organized by the Orange County Museum of Art. The show also tours to the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, in 2008. A catalogue featuring essays by Elizabeth Armstrong, Johanna Burton, Dave Hickey, and Al Ruppersberg accompanies the exhibition.

Jane Hammond: Fallen
Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH  43210

Sat, May 10 - Sun, Aug 3, 2008 Wexner Center Galleries Now on a national tour, Jane Hammond’s Fallen features a large field of colorful, handmade leaves, each inscribed with the name of a U.S. soldier killed in Iraq. The leaves in the piece—made of paper and fabric—are based on leaves gathered by Hammond between 2004 and 2007, and the spread of leaves grows as soldiers die. Fallen was first exhibited at Galerie Lelong, New York, in 2005, and shortly after was acquired by the Whitney Museum of American Art (and is on view at the Kemper Museum in St. Louis this winter). The current iteration of Fallen includes more than 3,500 leaves; the first version opened with 1,511. The New York-based Hammond has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the country, and her work is in public collections around the world.

The Bad Plus
Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH  43210

“Deviously expands the possibilities of what jazz is and will become.”—Paste The collective—featuring Reid Anderson on bass, Ethan Iverson on piano, and irrepressible drummer David King—have gained avid fans from the jazz world and attracted scores from the indie scene with the rockin’ spirit that underscores their approach. Their eclectic playlist combines restlessly exploratory originals with a prescient collection of today’s “standards” (as in instrumental takes on Bowie’s “Life on Mars” or Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”). Their latest release, Prog, continues to open up fresh territory. As All Music Guide put it: “anyone who thinks jazz is dead, that the great innovators have come and gone, needs to listen to the Bad Plus to be proven dead wrong.”

Pan Pan: Oedipus Loves You
Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH  43210

Don’t miss Dublin’s leading vanguard theater ensemble on their first U.S. tour. Pan Pan’s punk rock sensibility strikes a fierce chord in this savvy update of Sophocles’ classic drama of the ultimate dysfunctional family. They bring decidedly modern twists and ample humor to their explorations yet stay more true to the thrust and themes of the original than you might first think. Oedipus is still counseled by the wise Tiresias, but the sightless sage is now a Freudian analyst. Sexual desire runs unchecked and tensions still seethe, but now the backdrop is the barbecue grill of Oedipus’s suburban hideaway. Then the psychodynamics are literally amplified as the characters take up rock instruments to channel their rage in live music sessions that are integral to their group therapy. Note: Oedipus Loves You is intended for mature audiences.
