Sequencing poses in individual classes and over a series of classes is one of the fine arts of yoga teaching. Great teachers know how to sequence and pace a class so that students’ bodies open willingly and deeply while gaining in strength and stability. In this workshop, we will look at sequencing from various points of view: anatomic, energetic, and therapeutic. This weekend is eligible for 500-level TT credit, although all teachers and advanced students are welcome. Date: Saturday, October 2, 10:45a to 6:00p & Sunday, October 3, 9:00a to 4:30p Instructors: Martha Marcom, Marcia Miller, & Linda Oshins Cost: $195.00 if paid by September 3; $220.00 thereafter www.yogaonhigh.com | Blitzen Trapper Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43210
9 PM. Blitzen Trapper, a sextet from Portland, Oregon, emphasize strong harmonic singing and an experimental attitude towards an encyclopedic range of classic rock references. From Furr, their critically acclaimed 2008 breakthrough album, to Destroyer of the Void, a recent Sub Pop release, their neo-psychedelic folk-rock connects well with fans of bands like Fleet Foxes and Grizzly Bear. Yet Blitzen Trapper have defined their own musical identity while tapping into sonic adventures reminiscent of the late Beatles or the rustic strains of Bob Dylan or Neil Young. Beautiful stylistic textures and striking instrumental passages characterize their overall sound, as they reach for fresh territory they can claim as solely their own. www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=4933 | Sunday, October 03, 2010 | | | North Market Artisan Sundays North Market, 59 Spruce Street, Columbus, OH 43215

www.shortnorth.org | Friday, October 08, 2010 | | | les ballets C de la B Out of Context--for Pina Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43210
8 PM. We are very pleased to launch the dance season with another U.S. premiere from this outstanding company from Ghent, Belgium. Out of Context—for Pina, the latest work by C de la B's Alain Platel, is dedicated to trailblazing dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch—Platel’s friend, mentor, and inspiration—who passed away last year.
Out of Context furthers Platel's quest to amplify human emotion through body language that combines compression and contortion into a unique physical poetry that mirrors the accelerating anxieties of our time. Nine exquisitely skilled dancers stalk a raw stage to the sound of Glenn Gould's landmark interpretations of Bach's Goldberg Variations, along with music by Ravel and R & B hits. Pianist Glenn Gould was famed for the catalogue of eccentricities and tics that underscored his genius, and serve as a touchstone for the "penetrating portrait of the human condition" that, according to De Morgen, the dancers create. www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=4885 | Saturday, October 09, 2010 | | | Live Music at the North Market North Market, 59 Spruce Street, Columbus, OH 43215

8 PM. Having presented the Columbus debuts of well received Icelandic indie artists such as Sigur Rós and múm, we're looking forward to introducing local audiences to sublime singer and multi-instrumentalist Ólöf Arnalds, a one time member of múm. Her ethereal second album Innudir Skinni (translation: Under The Skin) for the One Little Indian label was produced by Kjartan Sveinsson of Sigur Rós (replete with a Björk cameo) and it showcases her breathtaking facility to frame sparse yet enchanting voice and guitar songs with brass and strings for full atmospheric effect. Haunting and otherworldly like musical forerunners such as Vashti Bunyan, Judee Sill and Kate Bush, the music of Ólöf Arnalds draws you into its swirling inner beauty with a seductive charm that is lilting and light to the touch. Or as Spin’s reviewer put it, "For those that consider Joanna Newsom too mainstream." www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=5069 | Saturday, October 16, 2010 | | | Live music at the North Market North Market, 59 Spruce Street, Columbus, OH 43215

11AM-1PM www.northmarket.com/activities-and-events/a-year-of-events | Flow & Let Go Yoga On High, 1081 N High St., Columbus, OH 43201
A Yoga on High exclusive! YOHI teachers Julia and Gail are combining flow yoga and restorative yoga in a workshop that aims to balance the active and passive dimensions of your practice. Yoga flow is a practice in which one pose flows gracefully into the next. Static restorative yoga postures melt away physical and mental tension and deeply rest the mind and body . . . think long Savasanas. Restoratives are wonderful anytime but especially after a more active practice. In this workshop, we’ll enjoy dessert first by starting with a centering relaxation before 90 minutes of active flow yoga. We’ll return to relaxation poses for the final hour. Students must be in at least Hatha Level 1 or have taken Ashtanga New Beginners. Students at Hatha Level 2 and above would also benefit. Bring an eye bag or a small towel to cover your eyes. www.yogaonhigh.com | David Leddy/Fire Exit Susurrus Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43210

8 PM. Rude Mechs (aka Rude Mechanicals) are an outstanding indie theater ensemble from Austin, Texas, who have won fans across the country with their savvy, freewheeling original productions. A few years back, they brought us Lipstick Traces, a riotously entertaining history of subversive cultural movements spanning the Dadaists, the Situationists, and the Sex Pistols. Now they return with The Method Gun, one of the standout shows at the most recent Humana Festival in Louisville.
The Method Gun explores the legacy and techniques of Stella Burden, an actor-training guru of the 1960s and 70s, whose sudden emigration to South America still haunts her fervent followers. Burden’s form of theatrical training, called "The Approach" (in a nod to Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler's Method), fused Western acting methods with risk-based rituals in order to give even the smallest role a touch of sex, death, and violence. www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=4889 | Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43210
9 PM. Like a modern day update on such classic male-female duos as Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin or Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra, this pairing plays off the principals' contrasting personas to generate its heat. Former Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan has a whiskey-and-cigarettes voice that is ideal for these songs, which are mostly penned by Isobel Campbell, late of Glasgow's Belle & Sebastian. Although Campbell projects an aura of sweetness and light, her sultry songs strike just the right note of world weariness to match the raspy tones of Lanegan's voice. As a team, they'll captivate you with songs of longing and regret that feel like whispered confidences, or as the BBC put it, "together, they’re a marriage made in musical heaven." You can expect their set to feature material from Hawk, their soon-to-be-released third album, which includes covers of two Townes Van Zandt songs in addition to originals. www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=4935 | Friday, October 22, 2010 | | | David Leddy/Fire Exit Susurrus Wexner Center For The Arts, 1871 N. High St., Columbus, OH 43210
8 PM. Alto saxophonist Steve Lehman’s riveting CD Travail, Transformation and Flow with his octet was one of the most acclaimed jazz releases of 2010, high on many critics' best-of-the-year lists. The forward-thinking composer and his octet created a brilliant balance of heady concepts with nimble improvisation, showcasing both subtlety and the bright sparks issued by his ready-for-anything players
Lehman and his talented ensemble create encompassing passages of music that are freewheeling, funky, and artfully fractured with shaded shards of sound. All Music Guide's reviewer called the recording, "music that is astonishing, far beyond convention" and continued, "Lehman constantly reveals layer after layer of fresh and inventive progressive sounds.… Highly recommended, especially as a prime example of new, innovative music." www.wexarts.org/pa/index.php?eventid=4891 |
