The winner of the Best Documentary Grand Jury Prize at the 2009 South by Southwest Film Festival, 45365 gets its title from the zip code of the film's subject, the town of Sidney, Ohio (located about 40 miles north of Dayton). Rather than focus on specific people or storylines, the Ross brothers, in their impressive debut feature film, provide a lyrical portrait of their hometown and of small town midwestern life in general. Beautifully filmed over the course of nine months, the documentary is full of affection for the town and its inhabitants and offers many artful and intimate glimpses of everyday life: 4-H clubs, high school football, church services, judge's races, and nights at the local bar. (93 mins., video)

Unless you've seen Swedish director Roy Andersson's previous film, Songs from the Second Floor, you've never seen anything like You, the Living. A snapshot of preapocalyptic modern life, the film consists of fifty elegantly composed shots of peculiar black comedy and quiet desperation. Punctuated by deadpan musical interludes—from New Orleans jazz to rock—and the bleakest environments ever captured on film, recurrent characters emerge to create a moving portrait of humanity built around a theme described by the director as, "how to behave around others."
