Stonewall Columbus Pride Holiday 2009 will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 19- 20, 2009 and is considered to be the largest Gay Pride celebration of its kind in the Midwest and is one of the top 10 in the country. In 2007, Columbus, Ohio received national acclaim in The Advocate as an unexpected yet fabulous destination for Pride. This year marks our 28th anniversary of Stonewall Columbus Pride Holiday as we rally toward a bigger and better event than the Greater Columbus GLBT and allied community has ever seen.
This year’s attendance at the celebration of diversity and community spirit is projected to be well over 120,000 participants. Pride Holiday is a crucial fundraising venture for Stonewall Columbus. Funds raised at the Pride events support Stonewall Columbus and its pursuit of equality, fairness and safety for the entire gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community.
The theme of Pride 2009 is FREEDOM! This year marks the 40th anniversary of the historic Stonewall riots which sparked our fight for civil rights nationwide. The questions we ask ourselves are: “What freedoms have we acquired and what freedoms have we lost in the last four decades?” The spirit of our celebration will embrace the issue of our freedoms and we want you to be a part of it. Join us in June 2009 as we host the following Pride events for the community: Run for Pride 5K, Dance for Pride, An Exhibit of Pride Art Show, FORE! Pride Golf Classic, and TransOhio Unity Picnic. The Pride Festival opens Friday, June 19th with entertainment on two stages including Rockin’ in the Streets and Boys Rock the Park at Goodale Park, 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20th is the Pride March and Festival. Lineup at the Statehouse by noon and March to Goodale for the Festival. Sunday, June 21st enjoy the Pride Brunch / A Salute to Judy Garland at the Westin Columbus Hotel with entertainment by the Richard Lopez Trio featuring vocalist Carolyn Mapes.
